Narva can become the European Capital of Culture in 2024. Whole Virumaa region has joined forces to support the candidacy. The decision to run for the title of European Capital of Culture 2024 was announced on 23rd January 2018. The candidacy and preparation period of six years will offer a unique opportunity to create a comprehensive strategy for Narva and the whole region combining all different spheres of life. The process of candidacy creates an opportunity to rethink the development and regeneration of the region not just for the year of the title but for a whole decade.

The title of the European Capital of Culture was first awarded in 1985. Every year, there are two European Capitals of Culture, and in 2011, the European Capital of Culture was Tallinn.
The aim of the European Capital of Culture initiative is to demonstrate the diversity of European cultures, common features, increase the sense of belonging of European citizens to a single cultural space and contribute to the development of cities through culture.
Today, Narva submitts its bid for the European Capital of Culture competition, which includes an expanded artistic concept, a detailed overview of the events planned in view of the title year, as well as plans for enhansing cultural cooperation between Europe and Russia. Narva’s ECoC bid is supported by the whole of Virumaa.
